Painting done on real buffalo skulls for a more traditional feeling

The slate that I use are actually slate shingles that came from the roof of the original Banff Springs Hotel that was built in 1885.

This painting depicts that of three horses just able to stay ahead of the prairie fire that surrounds them. One of the horses is caught behind the line, while another boldly jumps over.

Nature often likes to play it's little tricks, and Fleeing the Prairie Fire is fine example. After this particular hide was prepared, I was shocked to discover that the look of flames and ash appeared, created within the hide itself! All I did was add a touch of red to the tips of the flames.

This painting is also done on the buffalo rawhide. It is another example of Nature's own art. The look of the billowing dust, not only has a type of 3-D effect up close, but once again it is another of Nature's effects. These small dark areas on the hide remained after being scraped, and could not be removed.

Unlike the paint used by many artists in the modern world we live in, you will never find the paint I use on any store shelf. This particular paint is made naturally, by using rocks ( that I have ground to a powder personally), fish oil, grease and water. This paint is the same type of paint used by the ancient masters of cave art. I even apply the paint with my fingers, just to keep the tradition alive.
